We’re thrilled to have received the Commitment to Sustainability award from Invest in Ireland, which highlights our proactive approach to environmental stewardship within our operations in Ireland. We’ve invested in renewable wind energy, efficient water usage in data centres, and innovative initiatives like the Tallaght District Heating Scheme, which harnesses energy from our data centre in Tallaght to heat local buildings.
Amazon is the first company in Ireland to deliver unsubsidised corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs) for renewable energy – which means renewable energy is being delivered to the grid at no direct cost to energy consumers. Two of our CPPA projects, located in Cork and Galway, are now fully operational, and our other project in Donegal is expected to come into operation in late 2025. In total, these projects will add 229 MW of renewable energy to the Irish grid each year – enough to power 185,000 Irish homes per year.
These programmes demonstrate our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and show how we’re building a more sustainable company for our customers, our people—and, importantly, the planet.
We’re committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 as part of The Climate Pledge – 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. As part of The Climate Pledge, we’re on a path to power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the initial 2030 target.
AWS is making progress in meeting its commitment to be water-positive by 2030, focusing on efficiency across all aspects of our infrastructure, and reducing waste. Our Irish data centres meet exacting standards when it comes to energy and water use, while AWS’s newest data centres in Ireland use as little as 1,000m3 of water for cooling annually – equivalent to the yearly water usage of just eight average Irish households.
"We're proud to be recognised for our commitment to sustainability in Ireland,” said Neil Morris, AWS Country Lead, Ireland. “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams, who are continuously exploring new ways to minimise our environmental footprint while providing essential services to our customers."
Amazon is committed to supporting the communities where our colleagues live and work. AWS has increased economic output in Ireland by over €11.4 billion since 2012, contributing nearly €2.4 billion in additional economic output in 2022 alone - supporting an average of more than 10,000 jobs per year in local communities across the country.
