Transportation is a key component of our vision to make all Amazon shipments net zero carbon, and getting more zero-emissions delivery vehicles on road is crucial to achieve this goal. We recently ordered 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian, the largest order ever of electric delivery vehicles, with vans on the road globally by 2030 – saving 4 million metric tons of carbon per year by 2030. In Germany, we’re also teaming up with local partners to scale up electric vehicles making deliveries today.
Our delivery station in Munich Daglfing is now operating with 50 electric vehicles and 60 charging stations to execute deliveries to the customers of the Bavarian metropolis thanks to innovative zero-emission vehicles from Streetscooter and Daimler.
And it is just to kick off, further electric vehicles will join our German fleet in 2020.
“Amazon relies on partnerships with various companies who are developing new technologies and promoting a CO2-neutral economy to help us meet these ambitious goals,” explains Adam Elman, Senior Lead Sustainability at Amazon in Europa. “This is the beginning. We’ve already ordered an additional 200 e-vehicles to hit the road in Germany in early 2020. We’ll continue to put our scale and inventive culture to work with our global order of 100,000 vehicles on our way towards a zero carbon fleet”.
About the Climate Pledge
On September 19 Amazon and Global Optimism announced The Climate Pledge, a commitment to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early. Amazon today becomes the first signatory of this pledge. The Climate Pledge calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Accord’s goal of 2050.
