These girls, aged 11-15, were able to learn science and technology subjects in inspiring ways and connect to role-model leaders so they can aspire towards potential futures in this field.

“Introducing STEM fields to young girls empowers them to pursue careers in historically male-dominated fields. At Amazon, we value diversity and we aim at bringing STEM into the life of these girls”, says Herminie de Beauregard, Amazon In the Community Lead in Luxembourg.

The guest speakers of the day, Maria Ciolpan, Head of International Campaigns, Amazon Web Services and Helder Velho, Director of Amazon Transportation Services EU Linehaul, Amazon, welcomed the girls on December 13, 2019. Both demonstrated all the ways Amazon is forward thinking especially in regards to becoming more sustainable and minimizing carbon footprint.

After customizing their own labcoats, the girls broke out into small groups to explore four hands-on workshops. They had a chance to learn coding while programming DeepRacer cars to drive around a physical car track with Amazon Web Services (AWS), they created their own mobile application with AppLab, discovered how sustainability plays a role in Amazon services, and finally, explored with chemistry and molecular cooking while making “polymer worms”. Along the day, girls also benefited from mentoring sessions, interacting with the 25 volunteers and STEM role models present during the event.
