AWS and BSI aim to promote digital freedom in Germany and the European Union (EU). AWS and BSI want to create an environment that enhances the security of digital infrastructures while supporting technological progress. The agreement builds upon a history of constructive collaboration between AWS and BSI, with AWS being the first cloud service provider to receive the BSI's C5 attestation (Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue).

The cooperation also focuses on enhancing AWS leading critical security technologies, with particular emphasis on advanced sovereignty controls. A key priority will be furthering technical standards for operational separation and data flow management within the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, enabling full compliance with BSI’s digital sovereignty requirements.

BSI Vice President Thomas Caspers: "BSI shapes information security not only through recommendations, but also through regulatory requirements—not just for the federal administration as technology users, but also for technology companies that provide relevant offerings for the federal government. BSI's requirements have a direct impact on achieving the classic protection goals of confidentiality, integrity, and availability, as well as resilience, interchangeability, and the technical capability to use a service autonomously. To test and develop solutions for self-determined use in our digital infrastructures, BSI cooperates with national, European, and international providers. Therefore, we particularly welcome AWS's willingness to work with us on achieving these ambitious goals."

AWS’s investment reflects long-term commitment to meeting Europe's digital sovereignty requirements.

Max Peterson, Vice President of Sovereign Cloud at AWS, highlighted the significance of this agreement: "Building trust is at the heart of everything we do. This agreement builds on the strong foundation that AWS and BSI have established to keep driving efforts that help organisations meet necessary requirements. We look forward to our continued work together as we develop the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. We remain committed to ensuring all of our customers around the world have the most advanced set of sovereignty controls, privacy safeguards, and security features available in the cloud."

This cooperation aligns with AWS’s commitment to continue investing in Germany's digital future. AWS plans to invest €7.8 billion into the AWS European Sovereign Cloud by 2040, contributing to job creation and economic growth in the country. The new cloud infrastructure will be operated independently from existing AWS Regions, with day-to-day operations, technical support, and customer services controlled exclusively by AWS personnel who are EU residents located in the EU. As cloud adoption continues to grow in Germany, with 81% of companies now leveraging cloud services according to a recent Bitkom study, this collaboration between AWS and BSI will play an important role in ensuring the security and sovereignty of digital infrastructure, while promoting economic growth and global competitiveness.
